Testimony - 10/23/17

It is hard to believe that 2 years has gone by so quickly! I am grateful for the opportunity that I had to serve the people in Virginia and North Carolina these two years and for all of the things that I learned in these places. Things like the power of prayer and following the Spirit! It never ceases to amaze me when we were led to the right place at the right time and we were able to reach someone who was prepared to hear the restored Gospel. I also learned what effect that the Gospel can have on someone’s life! It was probably one of my favorite things to watch people (especially families) change and become happier as they lived the principles of the Gospel.  I am also grateful for a latter-day prophet. There is so much confusion in the world and to have someone who can guide us through that chaos is such a blessing. The biggest blessing of all is the Atonement. Without it, none of us could have any hope of returning to our Father in Heaven, and even beyond that, it has the power to take away the pain and the sorrow that comes to each of us inevitably in this fallen world. All that is mentioned here, but especially this last one, the Atonement, is evidence that our Father in Heaven loves his children and that he cares about us. Cared enough to send His Son as a perfect sacrifice, enough to reveal the gospel to Joseph Smith here in the latter days, and enough to answer each one of our prayers individually. I testify that all of us have the opportunity to attain exaltation if we but live the Gospel. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

We got caught in the rain!

Hello! Last week was just as depressing as the week before! We found out that the one whose "friend" was using her credit card again got in an 8-car pile up last week. The good thing is that she is reading the Book of Mormon! Sometimes when people encounter the trials that Satan throws at them they start meeting with us and they stop doing anything they shouldn't  and things go better and as a result, they stop meeting with us! Not her! I am so happy that she isn't losing interest! I have more sob stories about other people, but I won't share those!

We did find 3 new investigators this week! We were walking around Selma and there was a family who was outside carving pumpkins and we started a conversation with them. We ended up teaching them about Joseph Smith and the 1st vision and they set up a time for us to come back! That is this Saturday. We do have a problem with people not being there for the return appointment so hopefully, they are there!

The weather was miserably hot all week. AND THE HUMIDITY! OH MY HEAVENS! The windows were fogged up the entire week and my breath strips all fused together into one terrifyingly minty experience. It should not be this hot or humid in October. I am looking forward to shriveling up like a raisin next week!

That was about all of the exciting stuff for this week! I do have some good pics though, so be looking for those!

I love you!

Fall is here!!! - 10/9/17

About time too. It has been warm lately and a bummer since Fall is my favorite season. The leaves are finally starting to change and let's hope that a hurricane doesn't come around and take it all away like last year. Speaking of which, Matthew rolled exactly a year ago!

This week was a bit slow. We weren't able to meet with very many people. I am going to keep these people anonymous, but these are the reasons.

1. It is the birthday of the child they lost at birth.

2. Moved back to Pittsburgh, again, to escape an abusive relationship.

3. Got committed involuntarily by his wife to rehab for his opioid addiction. He overdosed on his way to an AA meeting.

4. Had to send her daughter to rehab again for her addiction to Heroine which she overdosed on and DIED last week, but was brought back.

5. Had her identity stolen to the tune of $30,000 several years ago by a friend, but this lady being Christlike forgave and let the thief back into her life without prosecution. Now they are at it again. Oh, and this friend stole her vacuum cleaner.

So that is all very depressing, but nothing new. We have encountered all of these before, just not all at once. It just goes to show how much the gospel can help people! We did meet a few who are HILARIOUS! In fact, we were driving yesterday to see some people before dinner, and there was a minivan trying to edge their way into traffic because they needed to turn and missed the turn lane. Elder Ahrens, being hangry almost didn't let them in, but being the good Christian he is, he let them in. We found out a couple miles down the road that it was the less-active family from the neighboring Knightdale Ward who we had dinner with the night prior and who we love! So that is why we need to be nice to everyone.

That is about all for this week! I love you all and have a great week!

Fall Leaves

22 - 10/2/17

A surprise visitor - Uncle Jorisen!
We found 2 new investigators this week! One in particular is promising because she believes what we do about the Bible being corrupted and she also really liked the Doctrine of Eternal Families. The other was just there smiling and agreeing the whole time. We are excited for them and what may come of them! Other than these two, none of our other investigators are progressing. One of them is going on a cruise to what is left of Florida and the Caribbean and won't be back until Oct 23. The other ones we are thinking of dropping. A newly baptized convert recently has his interview for the Priesthood and will be getting ordained next Sunday. They will be in Ashville (pronounced "Ashvull") this Sunday. Then the entire family hopefully will be going to the temple this Month! I love the temple so much and cannot wait to start attending again!

I have retired from driving for my mission. So many crazy things have happened that I do not feel comfortable driving until I get home. We transferred the designated driving privilege to my companion, but I had to drive home from Kinston, and somebody thought it would be funny to try and run us off the road. I did not agree. Then I got an additional 2 "Aggressive driving" violations on our TIWI within the next 20 miles. I was so frazzled that we parked ASAP after the 3rd violation and I resigned from all driving. I am convinced Satan is trying to kill me! I am still alive, so take that Satan!

The weather has cooled off, thankfully because our A/C went out. It should be getting fixed this afternoon. That's about it for this week! I love you!

29 - 9/25/17

This week was busy! We were able to teach a lot though, even though we spent all day Tuesday in a car shop. We needed to get our battery replaced.... but it took 4 hours! So it chewed up a good portion of our day, but we were still able to go out with a young man from our ward to visit some people and still made it a productive night. We have been making a lot of calls and trying to be better about making sure the ward comes out to visit people with us after dinner and it has been really paying off! Lots of work with less-actives (one couple has started the Temple prep class so that they can be sealed before the temple closes in January!) and visiting "rescue families". We have also been accompanying people to do their home teaching.  We also did a lot of service as well and was able to help a lady in the ward who we are particularly close to move some things. As you can see, I was a big help.

Hard work. It has also been really warm and humid this week so that made things quite pleasant. I am hoping that it cools off so that the leaves start to turn because Matthew robbed us of a proper Fall color show last year!

We have been doing a lot of walking and talking to people to try and find some new investigators, but it hasn't paid off yet. My short leg (particularly in the knee) has been bothering me a lot the past couple weeks, so last week I finally broke down and bought some insoles at Walmart.... and boy, they've been making all the difference!

I love you! Have a great week!

Hello - 9/18/17

This week was a bit better than last week! We taught 4 lessons on Tuesday, which is the same amount that we taught the entire previous week! So we were off to a good start! We are trying to build up our teaching pool so that we can continue to stay busy, but it is hard! If we tract in the right neighborhood, we can get 15 new investigators a week, but none of them will be promising! So we are going for quality over quantity. Hopefully, we will find some more promising investigators soon! The lady who has been in Denver for 3 weeks came to church and liked it! We might go to her Episcopal Church sometime soon, as long as it doesn't interfere with our services. I am very hopeful for her. She has some good fellowshippers in the ward and seemed to feel at home!

The family who was just baptized came to church... with the father! We weren't able to meet with them last week due to crazy schedules, but we have an appointment set up for tomorrow. Also, we thought that another investigator was giving us the runaround, but it turns out that her boyfriend does not like her meeting with us. So that explains it. We are meeting with her later today since he won't be home at that time, even though it is P-day. Sometimes you have got to do whatever it takes!

Nate got baptized! He has been taught by the Clayton Sisters for a couple months now and he got baptized on Saturday! So happy for him!!!!

Other than that, this week has been boring. I love you!!

We aren't worried about Hurricane Jose... - 9/11/17

They opened a Hurricane Irma shelter not 1/2 mile from our apartment, and most of the stores around here are low on food and out of bread, water, and alcohol. Gas is still low and expensive. Prices are still slowly going up. Lots of Florida plates too. Apparently, it isn't as bad down there as the news makes it out to be. We talked to someone who left Tampa Saturday morning, had a bit of trouble finding a gas station with no line, found one and filled up, then left to stay with his parents up here and had no traffic the whole way up! The prophecies of the last days are being fulfilled and everyone is "fearing and trembling". You would think that the work would pick up for us...but everyone is too busy "hurricane prepping" and our appointments keep falling through. What can you do?
Enough about the doom and gloom! The Baptism was amazing! According to Bishop's rough estimate, there were over 100 people there! The largest baptism anybody has ever been too!! It all went very well. The talks were wonderful and there were no major mishaps. Except in a football game later that night, Caleb fractured both his ankles in multiple places. He is fine, but frustrated. Then I had the incredible honor of performing all 3 confirmations on Sunday! I love that family so much...I actually started to choke up during the Sacrament Hymn "I Stand All Amazed". I hope that I am able to marry into a family that is as neat as they are! I can see some wonderful things in their future!
We just got back from doing some golfing....and golfing is not my sport. The next time I go to Top Golf though, I might be half decent!! I don't see where so many people find relaxation from it..... so many things to remember! Bend your knees, don't move your head, hit low, keep your shoulders loose....
Other than that this week was pretty dull. We weren't able to teach a whole lot for many reasons, but this week should be better! I love you all!

What else can go wrong? - 9/5/17

The District

Don't ever ask that, because God will answer!

I have never been so stressed in my life to be honest. Since Hurricane season has arrived and Harvey hit, it seems like everything has exploded. Gas went up to $2.64 a gallon as of yesterday when we filled up, which isn't that bad but the last time we filled up it was $2.13. Also, we went to WalMart yesterday and was doing some food shopping and noticed how packed it was. We went to the back and serpentined our way forward like we usually do and I noticed that the store was trashed, even for a WalMart! Especially the basic things like water, bread, sugar, pasta and milk. There was dry pasta all over the floor, and the checkout lines were so long! Then we noticed that most people had a flat of water or 4 gallons of spring water in their carts. When we finally made it to the cashier I asked her if people are stocking up and she was like "Oh yeah!" Then she went on to tell me that last week was crazy too because due to a tornado not too far up the road they had to evacuate the store and all the employees took shelter in the back while they waited for the storm to pass. She was really nice though!

Yesterday was Chaotic too. We had a Zone preparation day so we went down to Goldsboro to play sports. As usual, I watched because I can't handle all of the competitiveness. Instead, I was busy collecting a ton of info from the District like the miles driven by the District for meeting each month (1,173), baptismal dates, baptisms that have happened in the past year, and safe houses for hurricane season. I was able to round up all that info and send it in (all on the heels for being responsible for the safety of my District and knowing that they are safe after a violent storm complete with flooding and tornados passed through the area last Friday night), and the Zone Leaders were grateful because I am able to make their job so much easier by doing that. So that made it all worth it. But while were were down there we were supposed to find baptismal jumpsuits, but with everything else going on we forgot!!! So we are figuring out how to get that all taken care of, but it will all work out!

Then we came back and rushed to get ready because I had a baptismal interview to conduct. So we hopped in the car to make the 45 minute drive to Wilson.... and the car won't start. It just clicks. We pop the hood and look around and nothing is wrong. I am kinda freaking out because it has been a long stressful day, and then Elder Ahrens suggests to give it some gas when I try and start it. The car groans and doesn't start. By this time we are going to be late, so I try one more time before we give up and call to cancel and it starts!!!!! We hop in the car and take off, only to realize we forgot something. So we head back to grab it and hit the road again! We get only 10 miles down the road before we get a call from the teaching missionaries canceling the interview. At this point, I am ready to head to bed, but we went to Walmart (see last paragraph) because the place we were going to go (Aldi) is next to the place where we were conducting the interview. But there we ran into one of my favorite members who asks for a blessing because she got in a car wreck earlier in the week and has back problems from that. We were able to do that and help her with some things since she is also the caregiver for her parents and is a single mom to a struggling child who we are working with. So I guess it all worked out. The only problem is that my stress level was in the red!!! :D

The family we have been teaching had their baptismal interview and passed!!! They are still set to be baptized on Saturday and for a second I thought that we would have to move it again because of Irma.  She won't arrive (if she does at all) until late next week, so that isn't an issue. It is finally all coming together!!!! It has been a long time coming and we are glad to see it happening! We also had someone else move back from Pittsburgh and so we will be teaching her again. All very exciting!

That is about all for this week. Be looking for pictures! I love you!

Tree hit by lightning.

Picturesque North Carolina

I LOOKED AT THE SUN - 8/28/17

The picture shows how dark it got here. We were kinda underwhelmed. We did watch it thanks to 4 pairs of sunglasses and the reflection in our car window. It was pretty cool, and creepy.

A lot of things happened this week! We had a crazy storm come through. It knocked over some cinderblock walls, picked up a metal car port, wrapped sheet metal around poles, and took out trees everywhere. We were meeting with a family at the time and are glad we weren't in town where the damage was the worst. It looked like a tornado came through because all the damage was in a small area and was linear, but the news says it was strong winds. I am counting my blessings and am grateful I'm not in Texas. Hurricane Matthew was originally supposed to be a Category 4 passing through Currituck. So glad it wasn't.

We have a family on a firm baptismal date now! September 9th! Their interview is this Saturday. They are amazing and the entire ward is excited for them. The ward is supporting us pretty well. We are so very excited for them. THE STARS HAVE ALIGNED.

We also got a new investigator and he is Hindi! The Spanish Elders found him and we finally got in contact with him and started teaching. We are not quite sure how to teach someone who has 0 Christian background, but we will be trying! We have the pamphlets and The Book of Mormon in Hindi, so at least he will be able to read it in his own language.

The rest of my week is explained in pictures, so be looking for those! Have a great week!

The district made me a birthday cake!

Not today Satan! - 8/21/17

We had Stake Conference yesterday. We were 10 minutes late! BUT IT WASN'T OUR FAULT!!!!! We were driving down and someone's truck caught on fire and they blocked off the highway for a while. It was funny because when we walked in, we saw the High Priest's Group leader hurrying in with his wife, then we pulled in right next to a large family from the ward running out of their van, watched another family pull in and park kinda illegally in the same neighboring parking lot, but before they could get out the Elder's Quorum President pulled in behind them (it was parallel parking). All within 30 seconds! Then we ran in ourselves dodging other cars plastered with BYU memorabilia frantically looking for nonexistent parking. It was pretty funny! The message was good. We got to hear our Mission President and his wife speak as well as Elder Smith of the 70. Turns out that he had the same career that I want to have! International Relations working with Senators and the lot! Pretty dang cool!

We also had a Zone Conference on Friday. That was an all day affair, but enjoyable. Lots of training and talks on just about every aspect of missionary work. I do like them... but meetings from 9-5 are a bit tiring! We are having interviews this week. My 2nd to last one! Also, I will be starting to plan for going home! I received an email telling me to start "My Plan" soon. Kinda crazy that it's here!

Other than those things this week was pretty slow. We weren't able to meet with a ton of people this week for many reasons. We still worked hard, but it was one of those weeks where you get to the end and you are like "Did we even do anything?". It's times like that where we need to push through and endure to the end! This week is shaping up to be a better week though, for which we are grateful. We have some good dinners with less-actives planned and several appointments set up. In addition, the family we are teaching should be receiving their baptismal interviews this weekend! It sounds better and better as I type it out! :D

We are going to try and not go blind during the eclipse. We are going shopping again this week, and helping a youth missionary shop too. Looking forward to checking out some of the shops around here too. It's going to be a good day! I love you!

Busy week - 8/14/17

We stayed busy this week. Lots happened and everyday was full of fun stuff. Yesterday was a roller coaster. I was feeling pretty bad about our week, felt like we didn't do much. Then I was filling out our progress record and realized that we had filled it up with lessons! That and expecting 5 investigators at Sacrament Meeting made me feel pretty good! We started to call said investigators to make sure that they were still good to come. Every single one cancelled. That made me feel bad again. Then we went to church disappointed, and had a ton of less-actives show up unexpectedly! That was awesome! Such is life, and missionary work!

We had to move the baptismal date again. They are pretty much ready and very excited to be baptized, but the only problem now is scheduling. Lots of things (like football, school, cheer, family, etc) is filling up their schedule big time. They will get baptized at some point!

We handed the other investigator over to the Clayton Ward missionaries to teach him. He was referred to us by a member of our ward, but lives in neighboring Clayton Ward. It was tough to do it but it needed to happen. We will miss him though!

The weather here is so cool for this time of year! Some of the trees are already starting to lose their leaves. We are not complaining one bit. Apparently there has been some "white supremacist" stuff going on and now a lot of African-American people around here avoid us. It has always been hard to work in these neighborhoods, but man, now it's getting tougher! lol. Then again, Selma's welcome sign read "Welcome to Selma, Home of the KKK" until 2005. And also a billboard until recently. So that is to be expected.

Anyway, that is all that happened this week. I can taste fall, and am looking forward to it! I love y'all!

Don't mince your words. 8/7/17

Crazy week!

The Transfer was completed with only my companion's bike being lost. Haha. They thought that we were in Virginia but we were in North Carolina so we will be getting it later this month. On Tuesday, while my old companion was still here we met with a lot of people for the last time. One sister has a goal is to get to the Temple here pretty quick before it closes. Our investigator family is still on track to get baptized on the 19th! They came to church yesterday and we have an appointment with them on Wednesday! One member of our ward in particular is amazing. She takes such good care of us. In return we try to do a lot of service for her. She is single-handedly cleaning out and preparing to sell the home her parents lived in before they moved in with her.

The drive up to Virginia (equivalent of driving to Flagstaff) went well with no incident. The funniest thing was we passed an old car that was going slow and there was an older gentleman in it with an oxygen tube and tank, the whole 9 yards... and a cigarette. We joked that he was like the mines in Finding Nemo. One tap and BOOM!!!! lol. Some people aren't the smartest. My new companion is from Spanish Fork Utah! He is a great missionary and already knows a lot! We are already friends and working hard! On Thursday we had to stay in most of the day because of Weekly Planning (3 hours), Planning for District meeting (2 hours), Companionship Study, (90 min) on top of the normal studies! It was awful but we lived and had some appointments to break up the monotony. We met with the one Episcopalian Sister again! She is liking what we are teaching, even though the Plan of Salvation is something that she had never heard before. We are meeting with her again tonight after we have dinner with some of her neighbors who are members! We are quite excited.

We also met with another man. We are passing him over to be taught by the Sisters since that is the ward that he lives in. We don't want to, but it is what's best. He set a baptismal date of September 9th. That's the summary of the week! We have a full schedule so it should be another great week!

District meeting was a struggle, but everyone said it was good. The best part was where I mixed up my words a bit. I was very nervous when conducting it and due to me having less than 24 hours notice to plan it (I didn't get the binder with the outline until Thursday) I was just rolling with it. We had just set some District goals and I was going to say that I thought they were very attainable and go into how we should avoid unattainable goals. Instead I combined them and said "I think the goals are unattainable". Upon seeing a Sister's horrified expression and the other Elder's confusion I quickly evaluated what I said and fixed it and had a good laugh. I have no intention of doing something like that again! I think that despite not having any instruction from the previous Elder (All I had was a note saying "Well Elder Ciminski, by the time you read this... I will be home... Good Luck!) I will figure things out!

I hope that y'all have a great week! I love you!

Elder Ciminski
I haven't been to Virginia in over a year! And actually, the other side of that building is the Richmond Mission. We have to pass though it to get to Portsmouth.

Transfers are upon us...... - 7/31/17

So we did get a transfer call! My companion is leaving and going to Salem Ward in the Virginia Beach Stake to train there. That means he will be Shotgun Training! I am staying here to Train!!!! As District Leader!!! Pray for me! We will be driving to Virginia tomorrow and meeting our new companions on Wednesday.

We had a busy week! We didn't meet with a ton of people because we had 4 appointments cancel, but those that didn't still kept us busy. We got one new investigator this week, a wonderful lady who is a member referral. Her Episcopal church has many beliefs that are the same as ours, so teaching is easy! The other family with a baptismal date is still being awesome! We have moved their date back so that we have some more breathing room with teaching. We have also been doing a lot of work with less-actives that is starting to pay off a bit! This week is going to be chaotic so no telling what will or won't happen. We are going to try and make it a good week, even though Tuesday and Wednesday will be full of packing and travel!

Sorry it is so short, but I do have pictures. I will be sending those! I love you all! Have a wonderful week!

Elder Ciminski

I have run out of subject lines. - 7/24/17

Hello! This week was very, very busy. It started off with exchanges with the APs. I went with one in 1/2 the area and my companion went in the other 1/2 with the other Assistant. We saw a miracle from it! The Assistants have a Ford F150. So rather than put our bags into the backseat like we would in a sedan, we put them in the bed of the truck. Well out here in North Carolina we get massive thunderstorms out of nowhere. That happened while we were out! Pouring rain, huge splashes caused by the car, lots of mud, typical North Carolina summer storm. About 20 minutes into the storm I remembered that our bags were in the back.  We were driving the whole time and had stopped while trying to find addresses that didn't exist, so we never thought about them. I went to take a picture, and realized that it was in my bag, in the back. So we stopped the car, ran and got them, getting very wet in the process. My bag is waterproof and nothing was wet. Not even damp! No wavy pages, no water spots. Nothing. The same with the other Elder's bag. It was a miracle!

Other than that, nothing exciting temporally happened. We found 2 new Investigators! Not sure how promising one of them is, but the other is a member referral and is very promising! He is honestly seeking and has been asking us questions and reading the Book of Mormon! We are excited for him. We also meet with a lot of people this week. We spent a lot of time at a specific family's place last week. They are an amazing family that would only become more amazing with the Gospel! That is why we are here! :) I am honestly so excited for them!!! We also taught them the Word of Wisdom and they had some things they need to give up, but they committed to do so! Up next is the Law of Chastity, but we figure that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Mom and Dad should like it too! lol. Our other baptismal date is off. She moved to Pittsburgh out of the blue. We still have her phone number and we will send the missionaries up there over ASAP. Some Sisters in the Raleigh Mission sent us a new family who is ready for baptism! They moved into the area and had a baptismal date for mid-August. Not sure if we will keep the date, but the people seem really nice. We will know more after we have a proper meeting with them this week.

Next week is transfers. A total of 60 missionaries are coming in before I go home. So we have no idea what is happening. A lot will be changing, especially since most going home are in leadership. The entire mission is preparing for it and we are holding our breath. I will explain the logistics so y'all can understand why it is such a big deal and disruption. The 30 departing missionaries report to the Mission Home on Monday, July 31 to have a dinner and devotional. They fly out Tuesday Morning after spending the night in a hotel. That means there are 30 missionaries, who won't have companions. There are only about 90 companionships. Which means that 1/3 of the mission won't have missionaries for 3 days. The incoming missionaries fly in Tuesday evening and after spending the night in a hotel and having a devotional and interviews, they meet their companions midday Wednesday. So other than temporarily placing the 30 departing missionaries' companions, they have to keep track of 30 cars that will be parked somewhere until Wednesday, and make sure everyone hops on the proper transfer van to get to their new area. Oh, and the 30 training missionaries have to make it up to Portsmouth by 8, Wednesday morning. It is a 5-6 hour drive for some, not including traffic (we are about 4 hours away). So some of those might room with other missionaries in the VA Beach area Tuesday night. Not sure. This happens every 6 weeks, but normally with only 5-10 departing missionaries! Not 30! So pray for President Weed!

Have a wonderful week! I love you!!

An amazing week - 7/10/17

This week was amazing!

We got 2 new investigators! The first one was an old Church Headquarters referral that we finally got ahold of. She was asking all the right questions and mentioned about how we have been able to answer a lot of the questions that no one else would/could answer. The other investigator is Teresa's BFF! She is already game to live the Word of Wisdom and came to church yesterday! She is ELECT!! So very excited for her!!

Then we got an additional 3 baptismal dates this week. Three siblings who are 11, 12, and 15. Their Mom is a member who hasn't come in a long while, but still knows most things about the church. We didn't have a chance to ask for permission from her before we asked the kids, and so afterward we pulled her aside and just laid out the expectations we had for them and her (getting and staying active mainly) and she was fully on board and willing! It was also cool because we didn't want to ask without her permission and wasn't planning on doing it, but when Elder Latimer was talking I had the impression to do it and I thought to myself "If he doesn't right now, I will." Then he did it! We have been seeing a lot of that lately and it is amazing to know that the Spirit is with us.

I'm learning that the Lord's timetable is not ours and sometimes we need to roll with it.

This week was very productive. lots of appointments and a meeting in Kinston. We have had some amazing weather and gorgeous thunderstorms and lightning shows in the evenings...my favorite time of year out here. Even if the heat index is at 105.

Better week! - 7/3/17

This week was a lot better than last week! We were able to meet with a lot of people and were able to get a lot of them to Church! One of our Investigators came to church for the first time yesterday after we gave her a church tour on Saturday. We have been meeting with her for several months now and were very excited to see her there! Then we have another investigator who is being buffeted by Satan hardcore. She set a Baptismal date of July 29 and is determined to make it! She has been wading through hell and high water to make it and is doing amazing. She has faith to rival the pioneers in my opinion. So we will be praying for her! Also, there was a lesson with a less-active family that did not go as planned. The Spirit took the reins and we straight up rebuked, lovingly, this couple. It was not my personality at all to do so, but the message came across clearly, and the added tidbit of the two nearest temples closing indefinitely (Raleigh and Washington DC, meaning the saints here will have to travel to either Colombia South Carolina or Atlanta Georgia to worship. The saints in the northern end of the mission will most likely go to Philadelphia) was some added motivation to make it to the Temple! All of these people made it to church! So it was a good week!

We did a lot of service this week - stained a fence! It took a long time but it looked really good after! Also, we helped a member who we are close with paint a room. We did most of the trim. Going from UNC Dark Blue to white was no small endeavor! We are trying hard to improve the relationship of the missionaries with the members in this ward.

Other than that not much has happened! I hope that y'all have an amazing week! I love you!

17 Weeks left. :) - 6/26/17

We have been about 40 degrees cooler than y'all this week. I wish that I could say that I was sorry, but I am not. :) I am enjoying it while I can! It was cloudy for a week straight and the lack of sunlight was getting to me, but the sun has come back out and all is right once again!

We were once again pretty busy this week. Yesterday everything that could have gone wrong, did. Our investigator and her nonmember friend who she was going to bring to church went to Denny's together the night before and someone must have spiked their eggs because both got sick and couldn't come! Then a young man who was going to come to church forgot it was Sunday. None of the less-actives we were working with came to church either. Bummer! Then this happened when we went to help in Primary...
Ok so maybe that wasn't a bad thing.. lol. We are very close with the Primary Chorister and she gave us some ties to help the kids sing loud. The louder she sang the louder the scissors moved up the tie, and at the end she cut it! The Elder Latimer and I sang a duet for the Primary. We sand "We'll bring the world his truth". And yes, I sang in front of 30+ people. I can't believe I did it to be honest! I know that the Spirit was helping because we got several comments on how good we were!

We got a pretty funny concern from a guy we were talking to on the street a couple weeks ago. After trying to explain to him what our church believed in, we invited him to attend church. He said he couldn't because he couldn't afford to fly out to Utah. At first we were confused but then we realized that he thought that Mormons only lived in Utah and we had to fly out every Sunday to go to church! After we got that cleared up we received confirmation that his source on our church (probably his preacher) was very wrong because then we had to explain that there is no multiple wives thing and how if he went he would not receive a wife. I wish that I could say that concerns like that were uncommon, but they aren't. :) But that is why we are here! I help resolve those concerns!

No much else happened this week. I am hoping that this next week will be better than the last week! I love you all!

Yaight? - 6/19/17

Translation: Are you alright?

I love the accent here. You don't think of North Carolina as being the south, but it is very much so! We will be going to a pig pickin' later on today, which will be my first, and I am excited. A pig pickin' is essentially a barbecue where the pig is roasted whole over a fire. Pretty cool.

This week was good. As expected, this week was very hard for our investigator. Satan does not want anyone to enter the waters of baptism and she was no exception. She persevered and got baptized on Saturday! The service was beautiful and the Spirit was very strong. My companion baptized her and confirmed her the following day. Now I know what people are talking about when they describe someone as "glowing", because that is what she was doing! We are so happy for her, and because of her example in her home, her granddaughters who she is raising (they are 7 and 10) and her adult son who is living at home will hopefully be baptized at some point too! The son is warming up to us already so we are particularly excited for him!
Other than that not much happened this week. We did get transfer calls and I am staying in Smithfield with my companion for another transfer. We are both pretty excited about that! We have also had a lot of stormy weather this week which has made for some gorgeous skies. I will never get tired of them. We also bounced around from appointment to appointment this week with not much time to do anything else. Being busy is good, but I learned this week that it will tire you like nothing else and isn't always the best thing. We are still doing ok on miles, which I am grateful for.

We have several other promising investigators that we are working with, but none are close to baptism yet. We are continuing to work with them and help them progress! I hope y'all have an awesome week! Love you!

Elder Ciminski

Oh, and on the baptismal day we could not go wrong with finding people! We went to the Outlets and visited a member who owns a popcorn shop there (It is actually really good, and I don't even like flavored popcorn! It is called Popcorn Haven, they have over 250 flavors). While checking out we talked with the GM about what we do and gave her a ton of cards so that she could give them to her staff. Awesome!!! Then we made some visits and just before going in for the night we went by Wal-Mart to get some Neosporin and ran into a potential who is close friends with our investigator who was baptized! We got her contact info and will be going by soon! So even though we technically are supposed to do that stuff on Monday we still were about our purpose! :D

Hola! - 6/12/17

Our investigator is still on track to be baptized this Saturday! She had her interview yesterday and passed! She almost didn't come yesterday because many things went wrong in her life, which all it was is Satan trying to derail her and prevent her from being baptized. Once she realized this she texted us "Well Satan just lost this battle. I am coming to church today!" Her faith is amazing and is such an example to us!

We also picked up two new investigators this week. They are a mother and a son who last year lost their brother/son and are still struggling with that. We shared the Plan of Salvation and they really enjoyed that lesson. We think they are fairly promising and are looking forward to working with them more! The only reason that they didn't come to church is because they got the time of church and our return appointment mixed up! But they should be coming next week!

Other than these three stellar people not much happened Investigators wise! We did have a visiting General Authority, Elder LeGrand R Curtis Jr. He spoke to us a lot on The Book of Mormon and the blessings of serving a mission. Overall, it was a really good conference. We also found out that 87 missionaries LEAVING the mission in the next 6 months. That is about 1/2 the mission! So the entire mission is nervous for that! Haha logistics are scary sometimes.

Anyway, that's about it for this week. Have a wonderful week!

Hot week! - 6/5/17

It was quite warm all of this week. Not as hot as Arizona, but still warm. The humidity doesn't help at all either, lol. Glasses, camera lenses, YETI Tumbler lids, windows...all fogging up!

We had some pretty cool experiences this week. One happened on Saturday. We had just unsuccessfully been walking around Smithfield proper for over an hour because an appointment had fallen through and we were returning to our car when someone honked at us. He rolled down his window and asked us if we had time to chat, which we did of course, and he than said he would meet us at the chapel. He pulled away, leaving us wondering who the heck he was and how he knew what the church is. My companion and I decided that one of three things were going to happen. 1) He thought we were Jehovah's Witnesses and he was going to lead us to a Kingdom Hall. 2) He will murder us at the chapel. 3) He is a Less-active member or a former investigators and we are going to have an awesome lesson.

Number 3 is the winner! We didn't actually have a lesson though, but he was a less-active member and was going through a rough patch and we suppose he needed some upliftment. We gave him a blessing and he want on his way. He did come to church on Sunday which was a good thing.

The Spanish Elders found us a new Investigator at a Quincenera on Saturday! She is a lady overcoming an addiction of some kind. She seems pretty solid and the reason I say that is because she came to church yesterday! She had a really cool experience and has the beginnings of a testimony! The ward befriended her quickly (which is always a blessed occurrence) and I am quite excited to teach her. The reason we are teaching her and not the Spanish elders is because she speaks English. Anytime they find and English speaker to teach they hand them over to us, and we do the same for people who speak better Spanish than English.

Ou investigator with a baptism date is still progressing! She prayed this week that if joining the church is what she is meant to do that he help her out with going back to school. She had a 45,000 debt waved and is now going back to school, and being paid $250 to do it! She came to church again yesterday and is still very excited! We have a lot to teach her, but all of the tough lessons (Word of Wisdom, Tithing, and Law of Chasity) have been covered! We are so excited!

Other that that this week was normal. I look forward to writing y'all again next week! I love you!

My companion and a snake!

Memorial Day means Libraries are closed - 5/30/17

Happy Tuesday!

So, last week we got two new Investigators! One is a former Investigator that we have picked back up. I am hopeful that she will progress! The other one is a young lady we met while walking through a neighborhood. She said that she doesn't like her preacher because he is condescending to teenagers and single moms. We are hoping to meet with both of them this week! It isn't too hard to find new investigators, the trick is to see them more than once! Speaking of, the other week we got 5 new investigators and three of them were siblings and we are going back to see them today! Their Mom (who is a member) wants them to get baptized and they all like the Book of Mormon, so we, for good reason, have high hopes for them!

We had a lesson at the chapel with one of our more promising investigators. My companion has taught her from the beginning and he was on fire! Spiritual fire, that is! She has never come to church or committed to be baptized and that was our goal for this lesson. We had her tour the chapel and ended it in the chapel. After explaining the purpose of the Gospel and our Church my companion took the reigns. He testified very powerfully about the importance of baptism and told her why we wanted for her to be baptized so badly, because we loved her and knew that this is the best thing that she could do to help her with her current trials! She then promised she would come to church (and she did) and is now on date to be baptized on June 17th! It was one of those times that I just stepped back and let my companion talk because I knew that if I tried to, I would goof it up! I am glad he is so in tune with the spirit because it has helped us a lot since we have been together!

On a bit or a more disappointing note, that lady that we met with at Starbucks dropped us. She texted us early in the week about how she appreciated us and had "mad respect" for us, but this church wasn't for her. Such is the life of a missionary. Lots of lows and some pretty spectacular highs!

We had a bit of severe weather this week. We have been having a lot of thunderstorms and tornados since February was in the 80's for the whole month. A town less than an hour from us had a tornado that caused a lot of damage, but no casualties. Then on Tuesday we got a tornado warning on our phone. They had a funnel cloud about an hour south of us that was heading north! In the triangle that was the projected path we were in the middle of it! Luckily nothing happened and other than a lot of anxiety, we were fine. Lots of rain though!

This week we are having interviews with President Weed which I am looking forward to. Other than that this is about it! I am able to send pics this week so be looking for those! Have an awesome week! I love you!

Hey! - 5/22/17

So, I cant send home pics this week. Library computers bite sometimes.

This week was good! We got 5 new Investigators! One of our Investigators in particular I am excited for. We found her when we were in Selma, NC and we saw that she had put her car into a ditch. I may have mentioned her last week. But after talking to her we set up an appointment and met her this week at a Starbucks (a bit out of the ordinary but we are going to try and meet with her at a chapel with a member in the future) and the lesson was amazing! We went over the Book of Mormon and the restoration and she just soaked it all up! Her comprehension was amazing and she seemed to be really involved and enjoying what she was learning! Even though there was the smell of coffee (which I happen to enjoy) and the sound of blenders tried to drown us out, the Spirit was strong when we testified and she seemed to feel it! We set up a church tour with her and committed her to come to church, neither of which happened. I was so bummed, more than usual, but we are going to try and get back in contact her this week. We think that she might be a bit unsettled with her being the only female at our lessons, so we are going to try and solve that problem by maybe bringing a couple in the future, or solving it some other way. We don't know yet, but what we do know is that we are very excited and believe that she is elect! I hope it all works out!

The other investigator came from finding on our own efforts and the last three came from a part member family. The Mom is a member and the Father is not, nor is he interested in becoming one, but the kids, who are 16, 12, and 11 and very interested. We are hopeful for them, they seem sincere! There is a lot happening out here and it keeps us busy!

I gave a talk yesterday on fellowshipping. It didn't go as well as I would have liked it to. I got too nervous I think, but now I know for next time!

The weather has been super warm and humid this week. It is supposed to be cooler this week. Excited for that! It makes proselyting easier!

Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing y'all next week! I love you!

Hello! - 5/15/17

So, talking to the fam was the highlight of my week! But some other pretty cool things happened as well!

My new companion is from Utah (surprise) and is a very good and hardworking missionary! I think that we will get along just fine. :) One thing that I like about him is that he is very in tune with the Spirit. There was several times this week that he received and followed a prompting that ended up with us being blessed for it! One in particular that I would like to share happened on Thursday. We had just finished at a dinner and he felt that we should go and try and contact a referral. We have used a lot of miles already this month so I was a bit apprehensive when I found out it would mean 10 miles round trip. I decided to trust him and we went for it. The referral wasn't home, so a bit disappointed we headed home. On our way back I saw on a side street a car that had gone into a ditch at a severe angle and was stuck. We flipped around and went to see if there was anything we could do to help. The lady whose car it was ended up being very nice and talked to us even after it was clear there was nothing that we could do. We shared briefly about The Book of Mormon and the Restoration and left her with some materials and our Contact info. We got a text from her later on that night that she had read the whole "chain" that was written in the Book of Mormon and had some questions about the Urim and Thummin, our position on Homosexuality, the Bible, and the like. We are now going to meet with her sometime this week (hopefully). So if my companion hadn't followed the prompting, we wouldn't have met her! Pretty cool!

It was a bit hard to leave Rocky Mount, believe it or not. I am going to miss all of the great people I met there! But Facebook was created for a reason and I look forward to reconnecting with them when I get home. Speaking of, when introducing myself to dozens of people yesterday, the question almost always came up "So, how long have you been out?". In order to prevent people from prejudging me, I have almost always answered "A bit over a year.". lol. So far it is working. Except other missionaries keep coughing and saying "cough19monthscough" lol. I just don't want people to think that I am checked out, like other missionaries can be. I am here to work! I have been with people who didn't work and it's miserable.

Anyway, the weather is continuing to be bipolar. 50's and misty rain to 80 and humid. I do have some awesome pics to send to stay tuned! I love you all!

Elder Ciminski
I went into our bedroom to grab something and saw Bambi, so I made a noise, ran and grabbed my companion and my camera, came back in and Bambi had gotten startled by my opening of the window, and ran way over there. But it was still pretty cool. :) Animal planet over here!

Fun Week! - 5/8/17

Mike got baptized! It was a small service with some of his closest friends in the ward there. We broke the mold a bit and only had one talk on conversion, and it was an amazing talk! A convert of a bit over 10 years gave it and related it to Mike perfectly and we all felt the Spirit. Then he was confirmed by a young man preparing for a mission yesterday after our regional Stake Conference. We were able to participate in that and the Spirit was there, stronger than any other baptism I have had so far! The entire ward is very excited for him and his wife! We hope that they get integrated quickly so that they feel like a part of the ward!

I got transferred to Smithfield... NC! That's different than Smithfield VA which was my first area. I am excited to see the new place! I am still in the Goldsboro Stake so I am not going too far. Also, this is the place with the Outlets Mall.  It is going to be a bummer to leave this District though. We have all become pretty good buddies. Sadly, all good things have to come to an end and we have to move on.

We did get some severe weather last week! Lots of rain and even some Tornados! The plus side is that as far as we know no people or property was impacted and the weather has cooled off a ton! So we are enjoying the 60's and 70's for the better part of the week!

Other than those two things I don't know what else to say. We are teaching and trying to find new people. There is nothing new or exciting to report. I do have some pics and videos so be looking for those! I love you! I wish there was more to write!

This week - 5/1/17

Our investigator is still on track to be baptized this Saturday! He had his baptismal interview last Friday and he passed! Now this week we need to come up with the program and get all the logistics figured out! We are very excited and a bit stressed. We still have some things to teach and some stuff to do! Perhaps the best part is that a year from this Saturday he and his wife will be able to get sealed in the Temple! That is what this Gospel is all about, Eternal Families!

We also got a new investigator yesterday who seems pretty promising. We went to contact a referral that was next door, and when running through the usual round of questions she told us that she had a new neighbor and that she wasn't sure if they had been saved or not. So we went over and taught her about the Book of Mormon! She seemed to really like it and we have an appointment to go back on Tuesday!

We had a lot of rain on Monday and into Tuesday that is causing some flooding. Nothing too bad. The Tar River only swelled 21ft, compared to Matthew's 36ft it isn't that bad. But it is still crazy to watch the waters rise and come up through the storm drains, since they run to the river. No one we know personally had their home flooded, but we know of some people. We did see several cars that were flooded. We are apparently supposed to get some severe weather tonight, hopefully not too much more rain! The river was supposed to crest last night and it should be receding now.

That is about it for this week! I love you guys! Have a great week!

Hello - 4/24/17

Good afternoon everyone!

This week was very busy! We had six member presents! Four of them were with our investigator with a baptism date, and the other two were with another lady. Our investigator is still on track for baptism May 6th! We went over the big hurdles, The Law of Chasity, Tithing, the Baptismal Interview questions and he has no problems with any of them! He will be having the real interview this weekend! Can't wait for the 6th! :D Apparently, the other lady is solid as well. I wasn't there for the second lesson, I was in Roanoke Rapids on Exchange. My companion says she is cool, so I will take his word for it! Other than those two people, not much is happening.

Weather in North Carolina is strange. It was sunny and raining very hard on Friday and hot. Now it's cold and still raining. It is supposed to warm up and rain this whole week. Not sure what to expect. I know I talk about the weather a lot, but there is a lot of different weather to talk about!

So, as I have mentioned before, crime is high here. And some stores apparently put those magnetic beepers on detergent.

I thought it was kinda funny.

This week we took a member to a town an hour away to contact a referral who was actually a member. The visit went really well. I don't think we will see him at church since there is two other chapels 20 miles closer. On the way back he took us through a cemetery in a place called Hamilton. Super cool! Cemeteries (in the daytime) are very interesting. A ton of super old names and dates that blow my mind! I want to visit some in Safford or someplace like that when I get back.

Other than these things it was a normal week. Still working hard. Transfers take place the Wednesday after Heber's birthday, so we will know that Monday. Have a great week!

With love,

Elder Ciminski

Crazy week - 4/17/17

This week was a very interesting one. We were supposed to go out with our Bishop's son on Tuesday, which we really appreciate because we are chronically low on miles (we only have so many we can drive a month), but he totaled his car the morning of. He is ok, just shaken up. He stuck the nose of his car out in traffic, and someone else took it off with their car, totaling his car. He now has a 2015 Kia and is driving that, so we should be back on with him schedule this week. He is super close to putting in his papers! That is what we are most excited about! He has been working on them for months now and finally last night he sat down and did them!

We also had our meeting with Elder Cook on Saturday. Very long drive up. The meeting was very good. He talked a lot about enduring and serving and making the most of it. A very good message. The Spirit was very strong and uplifting. Then we got Sushi after.... which I thoroughly enjoyed. :) We made it to and from safely, even with one leap into the grassy median with 2 other cars because 70 to 0 on the highway is no bueno.

We are still teaching our investigator and he is still progressing! We moved his baptismal date to May 6th because he had a conflict come up, but we are still super excited for him! We taught him the Word of Wisdom and he committed to live it! That is typically one of the biggest hurdles Investigators out here face, and he cleared it with no hesitation!! We are so excited!!!

We did a lot of street contacting yesterday to try and use as many of our Easter cards as possible before Easter ended. We are going to keep using them, but after Easter they won't have the same effect. Anyway, we talked to a lot of people and were able to follow the Spirit which is always a fun experience- I never grow tired of it! :) :) The coolest part was that we ran into one of the Sister's Investigators at a popular park and we talked to him for a bit and he is going to give them a call to meet again! He was reading the Book of Mormon on his own and seems like a very promising person! Hopefully something comes of it for them!

Anyway, as always, expect pictures and have a great week!

Elder Ciminski

Busy Week - 4/10/17

This week we were able to get a lot done! We didn't see as many people as we would have liked, but we were busy all week! We got two new Investigators! One was a bible referral who actually called us to set up an appointment, that never happens! When we went by, she was asking all the right questions that told us that she was investigating for all the right reasons. She wasn't there for the return appointment, which was a bummer, but we will definitely go back! The other one is a former investigator who we picked back up who has met with missionaries in the past, a lot. I am still hoping that she will start to progress.

We also were able to met with our Investigator with a baptismal date on Tuesday. We brought the Bishop's son with us, who is preparing to serve a mission himself, and we had a really good lesson! We taught the last half of the Plan of Salvation and The Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Spirit was there and he is still very interested in this Gospel! We are hoping that he will be ready for his date of April 29th! His wife is being an amazing help as well, as she was baptized about 2 months ago.

Other than those bits this week was pretty normal. We are visiting a lot of new people and trying to branch out a bit. Have a great week!

PS I lost one of my flashdrives and have bought a replacement at Target. BUT MY DAD TAUGHT ME WELL AND I BACKED IT UP LAST WEEK!!!! :D :D :D So no tears here.

New Message - 4/3/17

Had no clue what to put in the subject line....

Hola! This week was a busy one! We dropped off my companion in Greenville, NC and picked up my new companion on Wednesday. That day was a long day, probably because we had so much driving. Then we had a District Meeting in Roanoke Rapids on Friday. The whole way up there was real heavy rain. Like monsoon heavy, except it didn't stop after 10 minutes! We and the Sisters survived and we had a pretty good District Meeting. We have a meeting in Virginia Beach on April 15 with Elder Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles coming up! It is a reschedule from the one that was cancelled due to an ice-storm in January! We also have a meeting in Goldsboro next Friday, and possibly another one in Kinston before the transfer is over! If you look at a map, that is a TON of travel time and miles! But meetings, if I try to make them so, are really uplifting! So hopefully I won't get tired of them!

This week we weren't able to see very many people due to our crazy schedule. We were able to see our investigator and set him with a baptismal date for April 29! Hallelujah! His wife was baptized not long ago and we are real excited for him! The only problem is that he works 3rd shift some nights and his schedule as a result is kind of wonky, so setting enough appointments to teach him everything he needs to know before he is baptized is going to be a toughie, but we can do it!

Not sure what else to say, so I will send it in pictures! I love you! Have a great week!

Avengers...assemble!
Spring is here!

Wrong Neighborhood - 3/27/17

We did get a Transfer call! My companion is leaving to Norfolk (Naw-fick) VA to finish training an Elder Farnsworth. I am staying in Rocky Mount and my new companion has been out for 3 transfers and that means that I am Senior Companion!!! I also get to DRIVE!!!!! YAAASSSS!!!!! Kind of excited, if you can't tell. :D :D But I digress. From what I have heard, my new companion is pretty cool and I am very excited to serve with him!

This week was a good week! We were able to see a lot of people, including some people who we have never seen before!

We also had an interesting experience. We went on Wednesday to contact some referrals we had received and the first house we knocked on was decent, but had a new Jaguar out front. That typically means that they sell drugs since they had a $60K car at an $40K house. We knocked on the door and through the door we had the following conversation;

Guy: Who is it?

Us: The Missionaries.

Guy: WHO??

Us: The Missionaries?

Guy: You are at the wrong house boys.

Us: Proceeds to run back to the safety of the car.

Out here we have to yell through doors a lot, but we have never had that type of response before! Anyway, we were creeped out and went down a couple blocks to contact another referral. When we knocked, the whole apartment was pockmarked with bullet holes. Again, not entirely uncommon here either. No-one answered. As we were walking back to the car I noticed how there was literally only 3 people outside. It was really nice weather, and normally people are out and about, especially in the middle of the day when we were there. I got SUPER creeped out by that and made the decision to get out of the area. We texted a member if anything had happened locally. He told us that a former cop had murdered a 17 year old teenager, and the local High School where he attended was on the verge of rioting and since the murder was gang related, the gangs were fighting one another in the hallways. Kinda crazy.

Not sure why there is a theme of crimes in my letter this week. Sorry!

On a sad note, Brother Lovett passed away last Monday evening.  His funeral is this week.  While it wasn't a surprise, it was still very sad.

Pollen has been killer. We have actually seen the pollen in the air and it sticks to everything. Everything has been tinted yellow because of it. Can't wait until it is over.

Elder Cook is coming back to our mission! The last time he was supposed to come we had a massive ice storm instead. On April 15 he will be back! Yay!!

That is all for this week! I love you!!!
