Merry Christmas! - 12/26/16

It is now time to put away the Christmas music!

Anyway, this week was a slow week for us because of the Holiday. It was difficult to see people because everyone was busy preparing for the holiday and with their families. We did get to help people prepare for the holiday! A member of our ward got a massive trampoline and needed help setting it up, so we helped him! It took about 3 hours with 4 of us working on it! But it is the nicest trampoline I have ever seen (if there is such a thing). We also went caroling with the other members of our District to some members of the ward who needed some extra love. I'm very glad we did that because I feel that the people we visited really needed it. So while our lessons may have been 1/2 of what we normally see, we were still able to go around a do some good. I hope that things start to get back to normal this week.

I enjoyed Skyping with y'all yesterday.  A lot!

Y'all looked great! I can't wait until Mother's Day to see y'all again!

After we hung up we stayed at the Bishop's until 6 our time, eating and visiting. Other members with their children were there as well. And the Bishop's family too of course!! The Ward here is so nice to us, I am very grateful for that!

That is all for this week. I look forward to hearing from y'all next week! Ciao!

All the gifts from the ward - they treat us so nice!

The weather has been a roller coaster. - 12/19/16

And I never know what to expect!! We woke up to a layer of ice on everything on Saturday, but it was 75 on Sunday, and now it is 35 and expected to freeze all the rain we got today, tonight. I am ready for Hawaii!

Anyway, until then we have been working hard. We taught 10 lessons this week, 8 of them with less-active members! It is wonderful to be teaching so much. I hope that we will be able to see it continue! We are still struggling to retain our investigators, and we have extremely limited times to find new people. We try to not be out and seeking (tracting, walk and talk, contacting new people, etc) after dark. It just isn't safe. Despite that, we are staying busy. Getting creative! We try and set appointments in the evenings so that helps too! We are telling EVERYONE about the Church's Christmas initiative. Not sure how many people are actually looking at it, but hey, it's not on us! I hope that y'all have been doing it!

Other than that this has been a pretty boring week! We are trying to see people before they head out of town for the Holiday, and that is hard. We haven't been able to get in contact with our investigator for a while, and apparently he is gone now until the 6th. So that's a bummer. He requested that we not send him our daily scripture anymore so we probably won't be teaching him anymore. :(

I don't know what else to write, but Merry Christmas!!

Compared with Arizona it's kinda bleak sometimes.

The weather outside is frightful.... - 12/12/16

My friend, Elder Martinez

You have got that right! This winter, like this summer, looks like it will be an extreme one! In fact, on Saturday, water froze as the day went on, not melted!

See??

That isn't stopping us! We still did service on that day for someone in the ward. We were cleaning out his shed and throwing away most of the stuff that got flooded from the Hurricane. If you look at the picture, you can see the waterline on the door. There is still a lot of people who are trying to clean up!

We had our ward party this week. It was nice. They had a nice Christmas program that was enjoyable, and to top it all off, we had several people that we are working with there! That is what made it special!

We found two new investigators this week. It is nice to be finding so many new people! We do have a problem with most of the new people, we can't meet with them for a second lesson! They are normally cancelling or just not showing up for their return appointments. We are working on a way to try and get back up with them so that we don't have a ton of people with only one lesson taught! We are also trying to work with a lot of less-actives, and all of these efforts got us 6 lessons this week according to the new Key Indicator system. The work is moving!

I love you!!

December! - 12/5/16

December is here! Kinda crazy to think that the year is almost over! I need to start thinking about a new calendar!

Life keeps on going on for us out here. We had a lot of appointments cancel this week because people are sick with the flu. We still taught 8 lessons even though I had the flu for a bit! 5 of them were RCLA's and 3 were Member Presents! The mission had a change up in how we report our numbers so lessons taught to an investigator without a member (otherwise known as "Other Lessons") don't count anymore. We also don't count referrals anymore either. That will take a bite out of our numbers because last week, 1/2 of our lessons were other lessons! This change is supposed to make us focus on working with members more (which is always a struggle) which will bring blessings I am sure.

We had to push back our date with our investigator because he will be out of town from the 18th to the 6th, and with a baptismal date on the 7th that just won't work! We still have a lot to teach him and there just isn't enough time. That, and he has to be interviewed at least a week before his baptism so that would be a problem as well. He is still enthusiastic so we will be working on getting him reset with a date.

I have had enough of it getting dark so early. It is 4:26 as I write this and it is almost entirely dark. Makes proselyting hard!

Anyway, that is about it! We are still chugging along and doing out best! Have a great week!

Love y'all!

Elder Ciminski

More damage from Hurricane Matthew - there is still a lot to clean up.

Heyo! - 11/28/16

Christmas Music.... I have heard enough to last me until 2050.

No White Christmas for me please. Snow is annoying as a missionary.

I will pass on the horse-drawn sleigh ride.

And our townhouse doesn't have a chimney, so good luck Santa.

But it is nice to see all of the decorations in the stores. Especially the evergreen garland with the white lights. I don't know why, but that is my favorite, perhaps because it's a classic.

So we got three new investigators this week! One of them we now have no way of getting a hold of, but we know where a friend lives so we will try again. But that friend thinks that we are cops and won't talk to us soooooo......

We found one investigator because of my companion's amazing bravery! We were trying to contact someone in a rough area of town at night and they were home but there was a gentleman smoking in a car out front. My companion went up and knocked on the window to talk to the guy in the car. Both the member and I held back because we were a bit scared, but the guy ended up being really nice and the member and I were humbled. We have a motto that is "talk to everyone!" that he definitely fulfilled that night! The other investigators that we have found since I have been here are the same. No real progression. One is still eager to be baptized on January 7th! He will be going out of town for the holiday so we are pressed to teach him all he needs to know! We have many media referrals right now so we are going to try and contact them and teach them as well!!!

We are going to try and do some more Less-Active work. We aren't doing very much and I would like to do some more. We taught a total of 12 lessons last week and only 4 were with Less-Actives. I like working with them because often times they still have a testimony and all we need to do is help them realize it and be there for them as they come back!

Thanksgiving was good. We ate with two people. I have discovered out here that I like Lima Beans a lot! But not Collards. I don't even have to eat them to know that. Bleh.

That is about all for this week. I love yall!!

Lovely Rocky Mount NC - 11/21/16

There is a Target here and a mall. Ross and TJ Maxx too. So it can't be that bad! I am constantly deal shopping to see if I can pick up stuff that I will need for school when I get home. To ease the shock of the bill!

It got cold this week and my body did not like that. I got the Flu! It started creeping up on Wednesday and peaked late Thursday/Friday morning. So that was miserable, but it didn't affect the work. I woke up during the peak and was laying there thinking that I would have to call the mission nurse and stay in the next day and how I didn't get a flu shot like she very strongly recommended that we do. Haha. I have gotten over the flu, but now I lost my voice. Like big time. I am pretty sure I would have reminded some people of President Kimball this morning. It has come back a bit, but still very gravely and forget anything even remotely high-pitched! So that has been the big challenge this week.

We found two new investigators yesterday! So that is a good thing that happened! Both are genuinely interested! I hope it continues because this area has 110 other churches. Competition!

I do look forward to serving here and learning what the Lord wants me to learn!

Me and the beloved Currituck trailer.

:) - 11/14/16

I got a transfer call! I am going to a small city named Rocky Mount. It is just under an hour from Raleigh and about two hours from here. It will be my first time leaving this stake! I am excited for the change! We will be reopening the area. It was closed for a transfer due to problems with housing. The Branch is sad to see me go! But yay for changes!

This week went by fast. We did some service for the afore mentioned member, we cleared 100 ft of ditch. My companion will be going back probably this weekend to work some more on the remaining 200 ft!

We are still hearing a lot about Hurricane Matthew. This week's story involves a member of the Branch who had to wake up in the middle of the night because water was coming in underneath their home (it is on stilts) and in a mad scramble, move their cars to higher ground, beach their boats (I assume there was no time to properly moor them) and get all their stuff from floating away! They ended up with their dock and boat house in their yard, 18 inches to two feet of water under their home, and are still working to repair other damages from the wind to their home! The area where I am going was hit harder than we were so I am sure that I will have more stories!

We got our first frost on Sunday morning, and man was it a good one! I pulled out the ice-scraper that I got last year (the best 5.99 I have ever spent) and used it! Winter is coming!

We had a cool experience this week. I was on exchange in Elizabeth City and we were going to knock a 3 floor apartment building. With the talk from last General Conference in mind entitled, "Fouth Floor last door!", we decided to start at the top and work our way to the bottom. You see, we thought that we would skip to the fourth floor, last door and skip all the heartache of the other floors and doors. And you know what? It worked! We found a less-active member in the very first door we knocked! So miracles do happen! And we still knocked the rest of the building in case you were wondering. :)

I hope you all have a good one! I love you!!!

Week? - 11/7/16

You know, sometime people ask me if I can believe if I have been out a year, and I want to say "Yes! I would believe you if you told me 40!" and other times I honestly can't. Missions are funny like that.

This week was very busy. We had our meeting on Monday, then went to OBX for prepartion day, and I stayed there again for an exchange. Then we had Zone Meeting on Friday. So lots of meetings and funky schedules. This week looks like it will be similar because we have Interviews, Deep Clean (a 3 hour period where all we do is clean), and Transfer Calls on Saturday. If I get transferred next week, next week will be exciting too. I like it when it is super busy, it keeps my mind off whatever problem is plaguing me at the moment, and those are in no short supply!

We haven't been able to meet with our recent convert this week. FEMA came to look at her place and that threw a wrench in our plan to visit her. Eventually we will get in to see her! We have an appointment with her at a member's tonight (which I am super excited for!). But FEMA has been going around helping people out with their damage from Matthew. We talked to one lady who had 16 Cypress trees down! Another lady who doesn't come to church much has 8 assorted Oak, Cypress, and Pine trees down! It may have been a tornado because she is the only one on her street that had anything down. There is also a place where there is a 20 foot swath perhaps a mile long where every single tree is down. That was almost undoubtedly a Tornado, but there was no houses in that path, so that is a blessing. There is still a lot of cleanup being done.

Something that we found out this week that is quite exciting is that we are going to be having Interviews and Zone Conferences every transfer! It used to be once a quarter. I am super happy about that!

We have been trying to find new investigators, and this week we got real close! We just couldn't commit him to a return appointment since where we taught him wasn't his house. He lives in a neighboring congregation so we won't be able to teach him if we are able to meet with him again. I am a little bit disappointed about it, but not really because we are still helping people come to Christ!

That is about it for the week. I will write y'all next week! I love you!

This week - 11/1/16

This week was good! The main highlight was Elder Bennett coming to visit. He had no lesson plans and went off the Spirit the whole time and it was great! What was kinda funny about the whole thing is that he rambles and will sometimes go down a path with his stories and won't be able to find his way back (in true North Carolina fashion) so several times his wife had to come and reign him in! I decided to fast before the meeting so that I could have a greater spiritual sensitivity with me when we went and I am glad I did! He spoke on many subjects, not many of them related, but I took something away from every one! The main thing was to not be so hard on myself. As you all know, I can be pretty dang hard on myself and it was a good reminder for me to go easy!

We did have our Trunk or Treat and the 2nd Annual stump burning Friday night. It was great! The fire got probably 25 feet high at one point and was very hot! There was also ash everywhere! We had lots of chili as well and some birthday cake because it was Brother Etheridge's 50th birthday!

We are at the beach again today. Ever since my new companion came to Currituck we have been going down here a lot more.

We taught 10 lessons this week! All less-actives. One of them came to church, which was cool!

Transfers are coming up in two weeks and my trainer and first companion is going home! He was where I was when I came out! It is crazy how fast time flies! My last companion is training now and I got the chance yesterday to meet his Trainee (I don't like the term "Greenie". To me, it seems derogatory) and he seems pretty cool! A real nice guy! It was very good to see him and catch up a bit.

Anyway, I am going to get a YETI cup today. They are supposed to be super nice and very good at keeping stuff cold. I'm excited. I will send pictures of it next week.

That is all! I love you!!!! Have an amazing week!

Elder Ciminski

Fun Times - 10/24/16

It was a good week! We were able to meet with some people who we haven't been able to meet with in a long time, and get a dinner set up with one of them! We had a total of 8 lessons this week. We were supposed to have a lot more, but many cancelled or pooped out for other reasons (like a set up). The recent converts are still giving us referrals so we are staying busy! Still seeking service. The Stake has organized trips to go to the neighboring Goldsboro and Kinston Zones because of the flooding there from the Neuse River. Needless to say, we can't go to that, but there is still some stuff to do here! Mold is a serious problem now. Especially under peoples houses.

This week, there was 7 wrecked cars from 4 people in the branch. All separate crashes. One family had their son rear-end a car who had stopped for a school bus on a divided Highway (you don't do that if you are on the opposite side), then when picking up a part for said car (he is very handy) they got backed into by someone who wasn't paying attention. The dad rear-ended someone on his way to work when it was raining. Then another family lost their car in the OBX when the Hurricane came through. Their daughter went to work down there and got stuck so the floodwaters claimed their car. When shopping for another car someone hit them and totaled that car as well. Two other families got hit in various situations. One member's son was in an apartment complex that had over 4 feet of water in it, and needless to say his Altima didn't make it. But we are safe!

Anyway, that is pretty much all this week. Next week I will be emailing on Tuesday because Elder Bennett rescheduled for Monday. But look for the pictures!

Have a great week! I love you!

Elder Ciminski

Hello!!!! - 10/17/16

We had the baptism and I have never seen anyone so happy and with such a bright light in their eyes as her!!!! That made everything worth it!!  I am so happy for her and nothing can taint that for me!!! Heavenly Father and His Spirit trumps all!!

So here is the crazy...

We had the pianist hop on to an emergency flight to Utah for unknown reasons. The baptism talk never hopped on her flight to Norfolk (the nearest airport) so she was not going to make it. So we had to find replacements for both, which we did and it all worked out. The the water in the font was green. Apparently it is normal and no one said anything. So that worked out. Then Katy Perry was supposed to sing Amazing Grace with the daughter of her member boyfriend and the one performing the baptism.

Yes, you read that right.

Katy Perry.

Like THE Katy Perry. The one who is comparing people to plastic bags in Firework.

It was over FaceTime but Miss Perry didn't show her face, but Eddy's daughter did and it was a nice performance. Apparently Eddy's daughter is a backup singer and writes music for Miss Perry and they are pretty tight. I don't buy it all though. It seems like all talk and nothing to show for it. But that would have been cool if Miss Perry did sing there!

Sorry that this email is coming to y'all the next day. We were at the mercy of the library closing yesterday and turns out that the computers shut off early by themselves. Who knew? So everything beyond this point was typed on Tuesday.

We are still chugging along. We are in Moyock (pronounced Mow-yaw-ck) today at the library here and it is so much nicer! And the internet is faster too! So I will send all of the pictures today!

Now that she is baptized, we don't have anything going for us again. We have at least half a dozen solid potentials from people who have recently been baptized that we are hoping will turn into something!! I will be keeping my fingers crossed!

We are still seeing if anybody needs help cleaning up after Matthew. Down on the Outer Banks there was a lot of damage, and the missionaries there have been doing a ton of service. When we were down there yesterday for P-day I saw many piles of furniture and textiles from people's homes that got flooded. On an exchange we helped a lady move out of an apartment that had 7 inches of water in it! But most of the people in our area have already gotten it all cleaned up, or are going to have a professional do it. Things like replacing carpet or rebuilding homes is a bit above my skill level! But we are keeping an eye out!

Anyway, I will write y'all next week! I love you!!!

The weather was less than agreeable this week. - 10/11/16

Excuse my hair - it was windy.  There was no amount of gel or hairspray that would keep it in place!

It was definitely an interesting week though. I know that the Lord was looking out for his missionaries.

We have been following Hurricane Matthew very closely, perhaps too closely, but as residents of the Outer Banks it would be dumb not to. On Monday it was doomsday for us! They were forecasting for it to be a Category 2 when it his us and the eye was forecasted to be a direct hit in Barco, where we live. Then all the sudden on Tuesday it changed to miss us entirely. Next to no rain and no wind. This didn't sit right with Elder Kingsford and I. Also on Tuesday, it got cloudy and windy and it continued like that until Sunday evening. But we still prepared like it was going to hit. The Government was still preparing and FEMA was still everywhere. They were taking down all the billboards and clearing drainage routes. On Thursday Verizon went down as a result of "pre-storm testing" and they were getting all the ships and planes out of the Military Bases. As the week went on the forecast got steadily worse. On Friday, we went down to Nags Head for District Meeting and several homes and businesses were boarded up like you see on TV. This whole time we heard very little from the Mission, so we both felt very uneasy about the whole thing. Then we found out that our safe house was with a couple in the Branch. We would ride out the storm in their guest house. At this time the forecast was calling for 3-5 inches of rain, so we didn't believe it.  Then the forecast escalated quickly to 8-10 inches of rain and 40 mph winds. So we were very grateful for a place to go. We packed up everything Saturday morning and headed over. The storm didn't arrive until that evening, but man did it pack a punch. Our car we could see out the window was shaking and the trees were being whipped around. The house was shaking and rain was coming in the gaps in the window and door that was facing the wind. The power went out about midnight. No one got any sleep that night!

When we got up we decided to go and walk to the sound and see what the water was like. By this time the storm was mostly passed, but now I know what 60mph winds feel like! This is what the water looked like Saturday Afternoon,

and Sunday morning about 8.

I don't even want to see what it was like during the storm! From what we saw, all the waterfront people lost their docks and whatever was tied up to/on them. Possible windows blown out too. And there was water everywhere! On Aydlett Road, not too far from us, there was a 1/2 mile stretch that had flowing water across it, and it is still there this morning, but slower. There is going to be lots of cleanup this week! Several homes are flooded and cars were lost. Many people are saying that this is the most flooding they have ever seen here, and they have lived here all their lives! We were safe and while I was scared, I knew that we were safe. We are back in our trailer as of this morning, and we got power back about 12:00 last night (we think it was out for somewhere between 48-51 hours, I dumped the milk), but some people won't see power until Thursday! We were very blessed!

One thing that I was impressed with was that the Branch had everyone accounted for so fast! There were many calls going out and people driving by to see property damage. There is now a list of needs and within a month I am sure that everyone will be as back to normal as possible! This Church is amazing like that! And preparedness too. One of the reasons that I wasn't too scared was because I have a 72 hour kit and I knew that if we needed to bug out quick, I would be fine. So get food Storage!!! It is such a peace of mind. As someone who can check off riding out a Hurricane, I speak from experience!

Our investigator is still doing well. Phone service has been spotty all week so we are struggling to get a hold of anyone, but she is still on track for this Sunday! She had her baptismal interview last week and passed! We had to cancel our Monday meeting (she has a tree on her home and is part of the group that won't get power back until Thursday) but we will meet with her tomorrow and catch up! We didn't have church on Sunday (Surprise... haha) so we will be making a lot of visits to members this week to see what we can do to help!

We had a mission tour scheduled with Elder Bennett of the Seventy coming to meet with us, but that got cancelled because many roads are still impassable and all the flights coming into and out of Norfolk were cancelled.  So that will be rescheduled. Bummer.

That is all I have to share this week! I love you all and am so grateful for you all!!

I love you!

Elder Ciminski

I am staying! - 10/3/16

We didn't get a transfer call on Saturday which means that nothing is changing for the next six weeks! This means that I will officially served in the Chesapeake Virginia Stake for over a year and the Currituck Branch for 6 Months! It feels like home here, not sure if that is a good or bad thing!

The person we are teaching is still doing great! As of now she is on track to be baptized on October 16th! We are meeting with her again tonight (surprise!) at a member's home. She is awesome and I look forward to seeing her get baptized!

Other than her, we don't have too many people who are progressing that much. We did have a lot of lessons again this week which was very good. This week is looking promising as well. That is assuming that Hurricane Matthew doesn't blow us all away! That has been quite the topic of discussion here. Probably because most people live within a mile of the sound here.

General Conference was great! I came up with three questions that I wanted answered and wrote them down. All were answered in the first session! I then went back and came up with another one for Sunday and it was answered too! Conference is truly amazing like that! I can't wait for the conference issue of the Ensign to come out so that I can go back and study and mark up all of the talks again!

This weeks email is a bit short, I know, but not much happened! It was just a normal week in North Carolina! Expect some pictures though!

Have a great week!!

Rain Rain go away..... - 9/26/16

...come again whenIgethomefrommymission!

We got a foot of rain this week, in about 24-36 hours. Lots of flooding. It was impossible to not drive through any of it, so my philosophy was that as long as I could see the yellow line while going down the center of the road, I would be good. The water was dirty so it wouldn't get any deeper that 4-5 inches before it would disappear. We actually had to turn around several times. There was also a neighborhood where their 3 foot ditches filled up and then the water went into their homes. Crazy. I couldn't believe it! We are safe and no ark was needed!

When it was drier, we were able to get out and we taught a total of 12 lessons! It was a great week! Our investigator is still progressing and just as excited as ever for baptism! We are meeting with her and at a member's home tonight as a dinner/FHE thing again.

Also, this week we had a Returning Less-Active pass the Sacrament for the first time in many years! He has come a long way from the do-not-contact he was only six months ago. I LOVE to see people change their live and come back into the gospel! It makes all the screaming and slammed doors worth it!

In our meeting we learned how to plan. We have had this same training a couple times since I have been out, but I still tried to learn a couple new things, and I succeeded! We also learned about the importance of time management. All good things to learn and master here so that when I get home, I don't have to waste time trying to master it! I am sure that it will help me a lot in a future career and in college!

Other than all that, it was a pretty normal week. We are heading down to OBX again today to see a lighthouse. I will perhaps get me a Polar Pop on the way back up. :)

Have a wonderful week y'all. I love you!

Elder Ciminski

Hello! - 9/19/16

So, this week I will start off with a joke that I got from Jesse Evans Smith, wife of Joseph Fielding Smith.

What is the Garden of Eden's phone number?

ADAM-812

That made me laugh so I thought I would share. I heard it while listening to a lecture by Truman G. Madsen. I am really liking them! I have been listening to them a whole lot more lately! In the Lectures on the President's of the Church series I am on Spencer W. Kimball next!

This week was a good week! We had seven total lessons! That is thanks to the fact that we had two member present lessons with our investigator. We have set her with a date for October 8th! We have another dinner/lesson/family home evening with her and some members tonight! She is progressing so smoothly and so excited you can't help but be excited with her!

We are still meeting with the less-actives that we have been and are working with them. We are hoping that one of them will come to church in the next few weeks! That will be exciting!

I did give a talk in church yesterday. I didn't feel that I did too hot but everyone says otherwise so maybe I didn't do so bad? I don't know, I tried! :)

This Thursday we have a big meeting up in Portsmouth and President Weed will be giving us some instruction. I am excited for that! These large meetings are always fun!

Unfortunately the computers don't want to send pictures this week. That is a bummer, but next week I will have some good ones for you!

With love,

Elder Ciminski

P.S. Here is a pronunciation guide for some of the major cities around here. :)

Portsmouth = Portsmith

Suffolk = Suffick

Norfolk = Norfick/Nawfick

Currituck = Currytuck

Corolla = Corawlla

Some are kinda funny but this is what everyone says around here. They give you a funny look if you pronounce it how it looks!

You can't put an Emoji in the Subject line. - 9/12/16

I tried. :D

This week was one full of service! We are still helping a lot of the members of the Branch clean up. We had one tree that during the storm, decided to go bowling through the rest of the garden and while rolling across the lawn, took out a smaller, second tree, a retaining wall, and a birdbath while narrowly missing 2 other trees. We are making good headway! I think we did almost 20 hours of service this week!

We taught 5 lessons this week and we are getting a new investigator! Finally! The Elizabeth City Elders have been teaching her and they have passed her off to us now! We have a meeting with them tonight with a member and apparently she wants to be baptized! As you know, we haven't found any new investigators in a long time so it will be nice to have one! Yay!

One thing that I have been doing differently lately is using a study journal when I do my personal studies in the morning. A couple weeks ago I got a new study journal in hopes that I would be more inclined to use it. It worked! I haven't been perfect, but I have used my study journal a lot more now and I was honestly surprised at how much more meaningful it has made my studies. It has been amazing to see the difference it has made in my daily activities too! So if you aren't already, may I suggest that you use a study journal when you study? It came make your gospel study 10x better!

We went to the beach to view the sunrise again. I took over 200 pictures! I will be sending some home today so you all can enjoy the beauty of the Outer Banks too! :D

Anyway, other than that, we are chugging along and working. I hope that y'all will have a good week!

Elder Ciminski

If you serve in this mission and don't have a picture like this it is because you didn't serve on the coast!

This was a tough week! - 9/6/16

Wait! I Need to be more positive!

I am positive this was a tough week!

:D

It was a good one though. The real exciting part was Hermine. She caused a lot of damage, though as far as I know no one in the area was hurt. Although, we know of 1 trailer, 2 houses, and one Ford Ranger that got crunched by falling trees. The computer is being slow so I will send as many as I can throughout my time here. We were safe and our trailer has only minimal damage (the skirt underneath is now loose and bent, makes it sound like we are sliding off the cinder blocks every time the wind blows!) Perhaps the saddest thing is that a member in our congregation lost their 45 foot Weeping Willow tree. It was so pretty and full and is now being chopped up.

Before

After
There are down trees and limbs everywhere and some billboards got blown over too. One was for an adult store though so that isn't much of a loss. ;)

The storm blew in at around 2 A.M. with high winds and rain, the rain was literally falling sideways. It woke me up and kept me up. The power would blink on and off all night but it stayed on. Then the storm intensified and the wind changed directions at around 8:10. That is when we think all the trees came down. Our power went out for good at 8:13 A.M. (I made a note of it). Driving around afterwards was weird because we actually saw down power lines with limbs and trees on top of them. It was like living the news! Needless to say, we did not go out that day. We toughed it out and stayed in all day. I don't like staying in for that long. I was anxious because we didn't know anything about the storm! All we knew was that it was here! The trailer was shaking from the wind all day and the loose skirt and lack of power wasn't helping. I never felt like we were truly in danger for two reasons, 1. The Mission wasn't giving us any instructions so I figured it would be all right. and 2. The Branch kept texting us and checking up on us so I knew that they would let us know of there was anything serious. The storm finally subsided at around 2 P.M. I was so desperate to get out and do something so we got dressed in service clothes and went out seeking service. We did that until around 6, when we went over to a members and hung out with them and had dinner since we couldn't do anything else and the power was out. We came back home around 8:45 and started searching for flashlights since the power still wasn't back on. It finally came back on at 9:16. And that was it. We were very blessed and I am glad that no one was hurt in the storm. I also have a 72 hour kit now and know what it is like to shop when a storm is approaching. Never again. I will always be prepared! :)

So that was the exciting part of the week. Other than that is was a very slow week. We only taught 3 lessons and no new investigators. I told President Weed this morning in my email, I feel that I have grown the most here and have done a lot of good, even though there is not much outward success. There is always things to learn from others and I am trying to apply that and I get to know my companion more.

We almost taught a new family though! We ended up having to cancel because she is going through cancer treatments. We are hoping to be able to teach her soon when she is feeling better.

That is all for this week. Be expecting more pictures!

Cooler Week! - 8/29/16

This week was good. We ended having to stop visiting a less-active we have been seeing because she is so busy right now. We let her know that whenever her life calms down we will be there!

And on a brighter note, Joshua got the Aaronic Priesthood yesterday! Elder Kingsford and I got to stand in on the circle and it was amazing! They have come so far and now the next step for them is the Temple!

We haven't been able to find any new investigators, but Elder Kingsford has some pretty good ideas that I haven't tried before. I am hoping that they will yield some fruit!

Not much exciting happened this week. We had dinner with an awesome Member who has an awesome dog named Gabby.

And these people just have a massive dog. Both dogs love pictures!

That Great Dane is taller than me when he is on his hind legs!

All the members in the Branch are great and take care of us very well. This would be a good place to live!

The weather finally broke so while it will still be hot for a while, it should be cooling down overall. It is raining here so that means it will be even cooler!

I can't think of anything else to add. This week was a very boring week to be honest. We taught 5 lessons. We have some pretty good ones lined up this week so maybe next week I will have more to write about!

But I love you all and am so grateful that you three are my family. I hope that y'all have a blessed week!

Still Alive - 8/22/16

Good week. It is finally starting to cool down! We should be in the mid 80's this week! Yay!

So, for transfers my companion is leaving for Norfolk 1st Ward and I am staying here.

We went on two exchanges this week. I went down to Nags Head for one and then my companion did the other one. I still love Nags Head a lot, but Currituck feels like home.

This is a member family with their niece. They're great. He came with us to a lesson and helped us teach about Home and Visiting Teaching. He had great comments and was a real help. We taught a total of 8 lessons this week! None to investigators though, but some of the less-actives that we are working with are making some real progress! It's cool to see them at church! I hope that my new companion and I are able to apply some techniques that he has learned to help us get some new investigators!

I did get a haircut today btw.

Some of the leaves are already starting to change and fall down. I think that they may be getting ahead of themselves. It was weird to see that start to happen already.

I will never tire of the weather here. And the trees. I still find myself admiring them and enjoying their beauty. It changes so much too. I love it!

Anyway, not much else notable happened this week so expect some pictures! I took some good ones this week. :)

Love,

Elder Ciminski

No way!!! Just like home.

Great week! - 8/15/16

We had a small miracle happen this week. In order to save time, I include what I wrote to President Weed about it:

"We had a small miracle this week. We had all of our plans fall through and were wondering how to use the 90 minutes that we had before we had to help with a move. We decided to pray and ask, and my companion got a street name that had been in our plans earlier, but was slightly out of the way. We decided to go there and found a small neighborhood (we had never been here before) that was extremely spread out. The driveways were a 1/4 mile long and it was HOT! We were wondering why we were led there, so we decided to walk the length of the subdivision just to see what was there. Not long after we did, I felt a fairly strong prompting to knock a particular house. I ignored it and we kept walking. I got a second, softer one which I barely took note of. Then, when we were just about to pass the driveway I got one of the strongest promptings I ever had to knock the house! So, needless to say, we knocked it. The man invited us in and it turns out that he was a less-active that was not on our records. He is moving sometime this week and was feeling very overwhelmed with the task in front of him. They had a large home with a pool house, a detached garage, and six cars that all needed to be moved. His wife was gone for the day with a load to their new home (which probably added to his sense of being overwhelmed) and he had prayed not 15 minutes earlier for some help. We were an answer to his prayers! It was also an answer to a prayer of mine to know that Heavenly Father is pleased with me. We went back on Saturday (all of the preceding events occurred on Thursday) and helped him move, along with a few of the neighbor kids. We were also able to get his information so that his records can be sent to his new home in Western North Carolina. I am so grateful that we had this experience!"

It was amazing! Other than this, not much happened. We helped a family move into a new place that is about 3 miles up the road. They don't have much stuff so it didn't take long. It was kinda funny because they got most of their boxes from a liquor store that was throwing them out. So all of their boxes were sporting some sort of alcoholic drink. The Branch has been so supportive of them and so very helpful. I don't know what we would do without them!

We have transfer calls coming up this Saturday. We have no idea what will happen. This is the first transfer that is all President Weed so all bets are off! The actual transfer day is August 24th. It has been known for Missionaries to stay long periods of time in Currituck, but again with a new mission president...

That is all for this week.

Have a blessed week! (It is a southern thing. Don't question it)

Baptism!!! - 8/8/16

The Baptism was amazing!!!!!! All five of them were baptized and loved it! President Weed and his wife were there so that was extra amazing! They said it was their first baptism that they had attended in the Mission!! Then on Sunday they were all confirmed, and I had the privilege of confirming the oldest daughter (furthest to the left in the picture). The youngest girl is 7 so she wasn't baptized, but she is looking forward to her dad baptizing her next year. They are so firmly rooted in the Gospel! We are going to try and start the Recent Convert lessons with them this week!

We also found a new investigator yesterday! It was nice to find a new investigator because we have been having a real struggle to find any for about a month now! We also tracted into a lady who had met with missionaries 10 years ago in Raleigh. What really set her apart is that she asked us for a Book of Mormon! No one ever does that!! The only problem is that it takes almost 20 miles to get to her place, so it is hard to get there with our daily allotment of 35 miles! We will find a way to make it work!

We have been getting a lot of rain! Apparently, it isn't that big of a deal for a storm to drop 2 inches of rain! I originally thought that it was a rare thing, but it's happened at least 6 times since I have been in Currituck! Crazy!

We got attacked by Mosquitoes last night. I have 8 bites on my face. It doesn't feel good at all. It was kinda crazy, we were walking up to a house and out of nowhere came a cloud of mosquitoes. No joke, no exaggeration. I have never seen so many in one place in my life!

Other than what I have already mentioned, no much has happened. Just a lot of walking and trying to find more people to teach! It is supposed to be cooler this week so I am happy for that!

Elder Ciminski

That awkward moment when you think you left your Mini-Missionary somewhere... - 8/1/16

...but then you realize he already went home...

...awkward.

But it was a good week with him. A lot of crazy stuff happened. To start off the car got a virus or something. It keeps on giving us weird notifications like "Hill-Start Assist Disabled" or "Fog-Lights On" (we don't have fog lights). It isn't affecting the operation of it so we will leave it be. :) We also got a lot of crazy weather. We probably got 5 inches of rain out of three systems. At one point the road was completely covered with water in Camden. We are safe and it cooled off the weather so I don't mind.

THEY PASSED THEIR BAPTISMAL INTERVIEWS!!!!! ALL FIVE OF THEM!!!!! So they will be getting baptized this Friday in Elizabeth City!! We are so excited for them!!! They all have strong testimonies and I know that they will go on to do wonderful things!!! I don't know what else to say about them except that we are so happy for them!!!

There is one problem with them getting baptized.... we won't have any solid investigators after that!!!!!! We are doing a lot of finding and have even taught a couple of lessons, but we don't have any new investigators from it! Our less-actives are progressing! We are doing a Book of Mormon reading challenge with a less-active to try and get them feeling the Spirit again. We are hoping that once they feel the Spirit they will make Church a priority again. Another person returning to activity came to church again yesterday, for all three hours!!!!! And they want us to teach their spouse the gospel!!! Things are moving along at least in that category!!!

We did some service for a family this last Wednesday... we cleaned one of their Tractors!!!!!
This is the one we are going to go back and clean this Wednesday. Those rear wheels are taller than me!!

We went and watched a sunrise this morning just past milepost 11.5 in Nags Head this morning. It was the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen. And some of the most picturesque beaches I have ever seen. So I know where we are going on our next big family vacation. And I know when off-season is so it won't be so busy. 😏

Nothing else major happened this week. Expect a lot of pictures since we are emailing in Nags Head in the Family History Center here!

I love you all!!!
